If you’re like most Americans, you’re getting hit with constant prescreening offers and robocalls. These aren’t just annoying (while they are certainly that), they’re damaging your credit score and creating noise when you need clarity most.

The good news? You can actually stop them. Both of the solutions below are free and take less than five minutes altogether.

What Is Prescreening?

Prescreening happens when lenders and credit card companies buy your information from credit bureaus and send you unsolicited offers and/or promotions. Every prescreening inquiry counts as a “soft pull” on your credit report. While soft pulls don’t hurt your score directly, too many of them can signal financial distress to future lenders.

Step #1: Opt Out of Prescreening

  1. Go to OptOutPrescreening.com
  2. Fill out your information
  3. Choose the 5-year option (we don’t recommend unlimited)
  4. Done

Why 5 Years Instead of Unlimited? The unlimited option comes with some technical issues and complications. Five years is clean, straightforward, and renews automatically if you want it to.

Step #2: Get on the Do Not Call Registry

This one’s even simpler:

  1. Go to DoNotCall.gov
  2. Register your number
  3. Done

The National Do Not Call Registry stops telemarketing calls and text messages. It’s managed by the FTC and works.

The Real Impact

Once you’re opted out and on the do-not-call registry, here’s what changes:

  • Fewer credit inquiries hitting your credit report
  • Fewer robocalls and spam texts
  • More clarity when you’re actually making financial decisions
  • Lower stress

What About Existing Offers?

Old prescreening mail might still show up for a few weeks. That’s normal. It takes time for the opt-out to process through all the credit bureaus. But it does work.
